If you've noticed that your hearing isn't what it used to be, you're certainly not alone.

Research shows that approximately 2.5 million Canadians experience daily frustrations due to hearing loss. There are others who don't even realize there's a problem. Contrary to popular belief, hearing loss isn't always detected immediately. It can go unnoticed for years, and is usually pointed out by family or friends.

SIGNS OF HEARING LOSS

The following checklist can help you gauge the health of your hearing. If any of these situations apply to you, a visit to our clinic is recommended. A hearing assessment using our advanced technology will determine which, if any, hearing aids you require.

  • People always seem to mumble.

  • You have to turn the television volume up louder than others.

  • You constantly ask family and friends to repeat themselves.

  • You have difficulty communicating in a group environment.

  • You have trouble hearing people on the telephone.

TYPES OF HEARING LOSS

There are three different types of hearing loss – Conductive, Sensorineural, and Mixed. A Conductive hearing loss simply means something is blocking the sound from being conducted to your inner ear effectively. Some causes include: wax build-up in the ear canal, ear infections, or a punctured or scarred eardrum. Most Conductive hearing disorders can be treated by a physician.

A Sensorineural hearing loss (nerve deafness) is a result of damage to the inner ear. Some causes include: long-term exposure to loud noise, natural aging, diabetes, or drugs or medication. Although hearing problems resulting from inner ear damage are typically not medically treatable, they can be helped with assistive listening devices and hearing aids

A Mixed hearing loss is a combination of Conductive and Sensorineural hearing loss.

A BETTER LIFE AWAITS

If you think you may have hearing loss, it's important to have your hearing checked as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more likely it is for more damage to set in. When hearing loss goes untreated, the brain can actually lose the ability to recognize or understand sounds.

You have nothing to lose and so much to gain by having your hearing tested. The right hearing aid can help you communicate better with those around you, and allow you to participate in activities you may have given up because of your hearing loss.
